ICUMSA (International Commission for Uniform Methods of Sugar Analysis) is an international standards body, founded in 1897, that publishes detailed laboratory procedures for the analysis of sugar. An ICUMSA rating is an international unit for expressing the purity of the sugar in solution, and is directly related to the colour. There are different types of ICUMSA units. Sugar is grown from two main sources: sugarcane and sugar beet. Sugar beets are grown mainly in the United States and other non- tropical climates. Sugarcane grows mostly in tropical climates, such as Brazil.
